Video #2 – “Chinese Recess” by Afterquake

Despite the small hiccup with youtube being down for a while, we are still on track with Project 30 in 30.

It is my absolute pleasure to debut this video for you all. As I’d said before, Sichuan relief is a cause near and dear to my heart and I’m so glad to finally be able to announce Afterquake’s part in Project 30 in 30.

In May of 2008, a devastating earthquake hit China causing tremors all throughout the country and wreaking havoc particularly in Sichuan province. The areas of Wenchuan and Beichuan (a promising and beautiful city with the best high schools in the nation) were especially hit hard. Almost 70,000 died in the quake and aftermath – many of whom were students.

The next year, I had the opportunity to spend some time in the village of Deng Jia Xiang in Beichuan county with the not-for-profit organization, Sichuan Relief Mission – a small group of volunteers made up mostly of NYU students studying abroad in Shanghai for the semester. While we were there, we met some of the warmest people and heard some of the most incredible stories of survival, anger, hope, and strength. We returned this January and while there is still so much to be done, the transformation from 8 months prior had been tremendous. It was absolutely one of the most life-impacting experiences I’ve ever had.

After the earthquake, folk singer/songwriter Abigail Washburn and electronic music producer Dave Liang of Shanghai Restoration Project took a small crew to Sichuan to visit the victims and recorded the moving experimental music piece, Afterquake in order to raise funds for Sichuan Quake Relief and to raise awareness of the situation. Having shared our experiences of the trip with each other, it is clear that this is a cause that is so personal to Abigail and Dave – to make a video for one of their songs was an honor.

This video shows footage of the students we worked with while in DJX for a documentary about the people we’ve met. The doc is directed by Spencer Shangkuan and features photography from various members of the Sichuan Relief Mission. This video was edited by one of our core team members, Jacqueline Sia.

Currently we are raising money to build a school in DJX, and planning on returning this coming winter. Thanks to Kevin Wong and the rest of the Sichuan Relief Mission.
